"I can't wait to start each season.  I just love coming out here."

Mike

A 85-acre farm near Pittsburgh is Michael's favorite place to work. He thoroughly enjoys his summertime job picking crops, hoeing weeds, cleaning the goat and sheep pens, and riding the bean-picker.  His favorite job is taking care of the chickens and gathering eggs. Michael is one of several adults with mental disabilities who work at the farm each year through a partnership with Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania. During the off-months, he works in the housekeeping department at Goodwill's headquarters building, but he always looks forward to getting back to the farm. Michael has been involved with Goodwill since 2002, taking Adult Basic Education classes and continuing to work on his reading and writing skills. His Goodwill job coach says the farm work has helped Michael become more focused. He now does things without being asked and voluntarily takes on additional tasks when his regular chores are done. Working on the farm has even helped Michael with his extensive backyard vegetable garden at home, where he lives with his parents and brother, growing tomatoes, garlic and strawberries. The power of work also has Michael thinking about the future. Someday he hopes to learn to drive so he can get his own truck.
